I’ve been a website developer since the early days of the web. I started at one of the first Internet Service Providers in Eugene (The Eugene Free Network – efn.org). This was a non-profit community network in 1994 and we had high hopes as to what we might be able to do with this brand new Internet technology. When Netscape came out with the first web browser, it was a very exciting time. Prior to that it was all text based.

Well, a lot of things have changed since then. One of the evolutions was the advent of content management systems (cms). The idea was to allow novice users the ability to build sites with very little or no knowledge of html. I tried out Drupal a number of years ago and it probably could offer a solution for end-users to easily enter their content, but it really seemed like one needed a programmer to setup the site in the first place. And then of course, one would be limited to work within the parameters of what the cms allowed you to do or what the programmer was able to customize for you. So at that time my opinion of the cms world was that it wasn’t quite ripe yet.

Recently I was asked to help a client try out WordPress for her mainly blog-oriented website. We had previously tried out Joomla and while it probably compares favorably to other cms, it basically didn’t offer a friendly and welcoming interface with which end-users can immediately feel comfortable. When I first tested WordPress I was impressed with the professional feel of the program. Themes were installable right from the web-based interface without the need to download and upload to install. Same deal with the plugins. This was a mature system that had a tremendous amount of third party development behind it.

So I’m enthusiastic as to what can be done with WordPress and thus have decided to create a new version of my very old arch-way.net site to experiment with all of the potential it offers.

This is a test of the email-to-wordpress gateway.

Since I tend to spend a lot of my time reading and composing email, it seems like this gateway could be a very convenient way to enter data into my WordPress website. The text entry method is very similar, so it seems to me that one doesn’t really miss much functionality in this mode. The one limitation is that the category starts out as the default that you choose, which of course can be modified later.

So let’s see how this looks in the WordPress site!
